Our Scariest Days At Sea (4 days from land)

There are times when sailing feels like Murphy's Law in action. Because if anything can go wrong, it will. And, most likely, it will happen at night.

Today's story picks up where we left you hanging last week. With the news that our life raft locker, and all its contents, had been taken by the sea.

Staring down at the gaping hole in our cockpit I made the decision to carefully pack away my wild imagination and put it in our waterproof, fireproof safe with our other precious valuables.

And even though we've been on terra firma for a couple of weeks now, I still haven't retrieved it. Because my mind is still reeling and I don't know what to think about all that has happened on this voyage. One part of me wants to chalk it all up to a calamity of coincidence and the other part of me wonders what nautical deity we must have pissed off.

Either way, I'm starting to understand why sailors are such superstitious folk.

Grab a tall glass of something good and settle in for what is no doubt our scariest days at sea. I hereby dub this passage, and chapter of our lives, as "Lessons In Fortitude With Murphy".

WHO ARE WE?

We’re Jason and Nikki Wynn. We been living and exploring the world for 10 years.
Our first six years of were an epic road trip around North America.
Now we’re on a sailing voyage about the world. Did we have any previous sailing experience, of course not!
Neither of us is overly talented, smart, rich, lucky, or retired. But that doesn’t stop us from reaching far-flung destinations, having wild adventures and managing everything that makes living aboard a moving vessel possible.
We’re two ordinary people that just so happen to live an extraordinary life.
And this is why we publish our lives on the world wide web. We share in hopes of inspiring you to find your adventure.

So casual about walking on deck untethered, no liferaft and their last means of escape/survival the tender not even inflated !??? Wow casual attitudes at sea get people into life or death situations very quickly and too quick too inflate the damn tender. Sharks love dumb sailors.

We go back to the time you guys were RVer's. My wife Rosalie and I have been traveling for over 50 years now. OMG the repairs to Curiosity are going to be MASSIVE $$$$$$ ! I'm thinking it's time to upgrade/change out Curiosity for Curiosity II. Think of it as a safety issues and your sanity!!! Maybe try and cut a marketing deal with a major catamaran brand to ease into a new vessel. Either way you're going to need to make some major decision on the future of Curiosity and your sailing adventures because these repairs are going to be expenses and will they really make this boat of this age viable for the sailing you guys do. I just don't think so! Anyway it's your decision and we all don't know you're financial situation but I for one would not like to see you back on the ocean on an old boat like Curiosity (even if it's like family)! it's time to move on for both you're safety and sanity ! Just saying. Big Smile my friends :)

Why have you not sent out a mayday call you have no life raft get hit with freak wave you could with no help nearby please don't be stupid

    1. Zonar Forester
      Zonar Forester
      Күн мурун

@Gone with the Wynns It's possible that David was suggesting a "Mayday" call assuming the EPIRB was on the liferaft. A Mayday is called if there is a medical emergency or a potential risk to life on board and you shouldn't tell people to not call a mayday unless the boat is sinking since in my opinion there were mitigating factors which would have warranted calling a mayday: 1) there was structural damage that could have resulted in the boat taking on too much water and causing it to sink 2) there was no safe way to evacuate the boat with the life raft gone and a gash in the dinghy. They did call the coast guard and were monitored but if they were not able to get through then a may day call would be appropriate. It is the coast guards decision on the severity of the situation and they may have considered the boat was dangerous or the approaching storms dangerous and they can divert another boat to assist. So the coast guard may need time to divert a cargo ship or other ship to the location. When I took the Safety at Sea course it was suggested by the instructors that you call a mayday if there is an existing risk or if there was potential for a situation to become critical so it gives the coast guard the opportunity to decide on the situation rather than wait too long and then there are no options for the coast guard or it become a high risk or urgent rescue situation. This is a great learning experience and most sailors do a debrief after sails such as this so perhaps the Wynns can consider asking the Coast Guard if they would be willing to be interviewed to discuss these scenarios and what they believe should be done. I know the following are Canadian rules but I don't feel like searching for NZ rules: www.ccg-gcc.gc.ca/publications/mcts-sctm/ramn-arnm/part4-eng.html. if you scroll down you will see the following:In the interest of ensuring the highest level of safety, mariners should immediately notify the Canadian Coast Guard, through any MCTS Centre of any situation which is or may be developing into a more serious situation requiring assistance from the Search and Rescue (SAR) System. The need for the earliest possible alerting of SAR Authorities to potential maritime emergencies cannot be over-emphasized. This advice is given in accordance with IMO Circular MSC/Circ.892 and similar advice found in the ICAO/IMO International Aeronautical and Maritime SAR (IAMSAR) Manual Volume III. Further, there have been similar recommendations arising from serious SAR cases in the Canadian SAR Region where masters have failed to provide this notice until after the situation deteriorated. This notification allows SAR authorities to carry out preliminary and contingency planning that could make a critical difference if the situation worsens. Time lost in the initial stages of a SAR mission may be crucial to its eventual outcome. It is always best to consider the worst-case scenario and to alert SAR authorities accordingly. This notification places no obligations upon the master except to advise the CCG when the situation has been corrected.

They are not stupid. But a mayday is to be used only in the event of an actual emergency, not to report that your boat has been damaged. Unless the damage results in the boat beginning to sink or becoming completely adrift, it is not a mayday situation. Nikki and Jason did contact the NZ Coastguard via satphone to report the loss of the liferaft (to prevent them from mounting an unnecessary rescue if someone else reports the raft adrift). The Coastguard obtained Curiosity's tracking info and they tracked her progress and periodically checked back with the Wynns via phone to ensure that they were still making satisfactory progress. So NOT stupid, and not a mayday situation. Curious Minion

Praising the LORD Almighty for keeping you safe and bringing you to safe harbor. Time to decompress, assess and plan next steps.

Your experience losing part of the boat (especially the life raft locker!!) with strong seas but not storm level makes me question if your boat is truly ‘blue water’ capable. Begs the question. Anyway, Butyl tape, the ‘duck tape’ of the seven seas! The lengths people will go to escape Dallas in the summer.

For my next boat really debate monohual Hallberg Rassey and a Cat. What worries me the most about a lot of Cats I've been on is they really don't look built like an ocean cruiser should be. You guys are more adventurous than me but I would not want a boat with things falling off in that sea state.

What a bummer! Lets hope you can find someone to do it and get it fixed in Aukland!
